Caprivi and Okavango Birding Safari


This 6 Day birding safari will take you through some of the best birding areas in Southern Africa. We will bird in a variety of habitats and will focus on the birding specials only found in this area. We will bird along and do boat cruises on the Zambezi, Kwando and Okavango Rivers. We can extend the trip to include a few days in Zambia to look for the localised Black-cheeked Lovebird and the Chaplin's Barbet - Zambia's only true endemic.

Birding specials:

Pel's Fishing-owl, White-backed Night-heron, Schalow's Turaco, African Finfoot, Lesser Jacana, Rufous-bellied Heron, Slaty Egret, Wattled Crane, Shelley's Sunbird, Western Banded Snake-eagle, Rufous-bellied Tit, Grey-headed Parrot, Luapula's Cisticola, Chirping Cisticola, Racket-tailed Roller, African Skimmer, Swamp Boubou, Hartlaub's Babbler, Black-faced Babbler, Souza's Shrike, African Hobby.

Katima Mulilo

DAY 1: Katima Mulilo

We will spend most of the day birding around Katima Mulilo. The habitats we will bird in include Zambezi floodplain, riverine forest, Mopane woodland as well as various pans in the area. We will also do a late afternoon/early evening boat cruise to try and find the Pel's Fishing Owl and the White-backed Night-heron. If the water level is low enough we will try and find African Skimmers as well.

Other specials found in this area include Shelley's Sunbird, Schalow's Turaco, Rock Pratincole, Western-banded Snake-eagle, Pennant-winged Nightjar, African Finfoot, Rufous-bellied heron, Pygmy Goose, Three-banded Courser, African Skimmer, Golden Weaver, Copper Sunbird, Hartlaub's Babbler, Arnot's Chat and Retz's Helmet-shrike and Thrush Nightingale to name a few.

DAY 2: Kwando River

DAY 2: Kwando River

We will spend the morning birding in the Katima Mulilo area and then drive to the Kwando River where we will spend that evening. Our lodge is situated on the banks of the beautiful Kwando River. Part of the birding will be done in Bwabwata National Park.

Specials found in this area include Racket-tailed Roller, Pygmy Goose, Slaty Egret, African and Eurasian Hobbies, Wattled Crane, Rufous-bellied Heron, Copper Sunbird African and European Golden Orioles, Chirping and Luapula's Cisticolas and Lesser Jacana.

Okavango Panhandle

DAY 3: Okavango Panhandle

We will start with an early morning boat cruise on the Kwando River and after rounding up our Kwando River birding we will depart for the Okavango River where we will spend the evening in a lodge on the Namibian side of the Okavango Panhandle. Part of the birding in this area will be done in Mahango Game Reserve which is one of the region's best parks for birding with the added bonus of seeing big game like elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, roan and sable.

The specials we will look for in the area includes Rock Pratincole, Black-faced Babbler, Meve's Starling, White-backed Night-heron, Lesser Jacana, White-browed, Coppery-tailed Senegal and Black Coucals, African Skimmer, Long-toed Lapwing, Western Banded Snake-eagle and Wattled Crane to name a few.

DAY 4: Botswana

DAY 4: Botswana

After a few hours of birding we will depart for the Shakawe region on the Botswana side of the Okavango Panhandle. We will do a late afternoon boat cruise on the Okavango River well known for great sightings of Pel's Fishing-Owl. Narina Trogon is another big special for the area which is really difficult to see elsewhere in the region. Other great birds we hope to see include Black-faced Babbler, Slaty Egret, Long-toed Lapwing, Lesser Jacana, Lesser Moorhen, Allen's Gallinule, White-backed Night-heron and Retz's Helmet-shrikes. We will stay in a lodge on the banks of the Okavango River.

Mahango Game Reserve

DAY 5: Mahango Game Reserve

After early morning birding in the riverine forest we will make our way back to Namibia birding in Mahango Game Reserve on the way. Our main focus today as we move further west will be to find some of the big specials of the Caprivi region and most of our efforts will be in finding them. They include Grey-headed Parrot, Souza's Shrike, Sharp-tailed Starling, Rufous-bellied Tit, Racket-tailed Roller and Green-backed Honeybird. Our lodge for that evening will again be on the banks of the Okavango River.

DAY 6: Back to Katima Mulilo

After early morning birding finding the specials that we have missed the previous day and a good breakfast we will start making our way back to Katima Mulilo birding along the way. We can be back in Katima Mulilo by lunchtime if you have to catch a flight.
